Roland TR-09 Rhythm Composer
Firmware update
The TR-09 is no different to any of the other software driven boutique instrument that has been launched by Roland over the past few years. It needs its firmware updating.
At the point of launch the instrument contained operational bugs and / or was missing features that were included in the promotional literature that were not included in the base firmware installed on the instrument at the point of release.
Typically, immediately following the release of the boutique instrument Roland would have released a firmware update. This post release version of the firmware is the version that should be installed on the instrument as the minimum version for use.
Following release a few additional features have been added like the ability to use the instrument as a clock source and the ability to use the instrument with Serato platform.
My advice to anyone who owns a TR-09 is to upgrade the instrument to the latest version of the software that was released by Roland. The latest version of the firmware can be found on the roland.com website. Do not use the localised Roland sites e.g. roland.co.uk being the UK instance. These localised versions do not carry the download archives for both software and documentation.
After launching each boutique instrument, Roland quickly issued firmware updates. The Roland TR-09 Drum Machine followed this pattern.
In order to ascertain whether your Roland TR-09 needs a a firmware update you need to first find out what version of the firmware is currently installed.
This video shows you how to quickly find the firmware version ahead of upgrading the firmware to the latest released version which is recommended.

When I acquired my Roland TR-09 it had firmware version V1.04 installed. The latest version at the point of recording this video is V1.06.
This video shows how I upgraded the Roland TR-09 firmware to the latest version at the point of recording the video. The process is the same for any prior or future version of the firmware that are released for this instrument.
