Yamaha SY77
Refurbishment and Repair Project

About 18 months, maybe 2 years ago I acquired my Yamaha SY77. It really sounded peachy, but as with many of these Yamaha synthesisers produced at the time there was an issue with the Mitsumi floppy disk drive.

I made a list of some other issues that I thought this synthesiser had.  Then I put the synthesiser in a box and took it to my storage unit.  And that is where is stayed for that 18 months to 2 years.

In the meantime I started to search varions websites for the parts I needed to bring this synthesiser back to full operation.  And then other priorities got in the way and this project took a back seat.

I had just finished another project.  The parts to undertake this project had arrived and were sitting in the storage unit with the Yamaha SY77.  At this point I decided that it was time to get this project through the workshop and return this synthesiser back into full operation.

In addition to the spare parts that I had acquired.  I had also acquired several floppy disks with tones for the sound banks of the synthesiser, which had not been tested.

The Yamaha SY77 was what I consider the natural successor to the Yamaha DX synthesiser line. Released in 1989, this synthesiser and it's big brother the Yamaha SY99 released two years later provided the musician with the same FM synthesis from the DX-line and AWM synthesis created for the SY-line.

This series of videos were created to show how I repaired and refurbished my Yamaha SY77.
