Yamaha SY99 Synthesiser
Diagnostics and Factory Reset
When Yamaha released the Yamaha SY99 they incorporated several reset and diganostic functions into the ROM chips contained within the synthesiser.
I created a few videos show how to access these features:
How to access and then run the SY99 diagnostic program. The diagnostic program contained in the synthesisers ROM allows you to test all of the functions of the keyboard. These can either be executed individually or can be executed automatically in sequence.
How to reset the SY99 to its factory setup. This feature will reset the synthesiser back to the state that it rolled out of the factory when new. This includes resetting the tones, programs and more importantly the synthesiser settings.
The SY99 has a self diagnostic mode in the within an onboard ROM chip(s). This diagnostic mode is designed to help the Yamaha technician in the day and now you the synthesiser enthusiast understand what could be going on within the SY99.
While the tests are relatively basic they do cover the main functions / capabilities of the synthesiser and with a bit of luck will steer you toward the area of the synth that will need attention.
The diagnostics will help you with the:
User interface - All buttons, knobs, faders and screen
keyboard - Each note on the key bed
interfaces - Primarily MIDI connectivity
inputs - Foot pedals and switches
outputs - Master and sub outputs plus headphones
Once executed you should be able to rule a section of the SY99 in or out of your problem.

The SY99 can be simply reset back to its factory condition.
The factory configuration is stored on a chip within the synthesiser. It is activated by a series of keystrokes. The synthesiser will be returned to the factory set, effectively a full reset, in a few seconds following execution.
